General information

Duration:
4 months
Commitment:
Full-time
Description:

We are seeking a motivated master's student in Chemistry/Biochemistry/Biology or similar interested in conducting their thesis in the field of Environmental Chemistry. The student will be integrated into the Laboratory of Bioanalysis, Biomaterial, and Biotechnology (LB3) under the supervision of Dr. Annalisa Sambolino and Dr. Ana Dinis, led by Prof. Nereida Cordeiro at the University of Madeira. This collaboration extends to the MARE-Madeira research center.

The thesis work plan involves optimizing and applying an extraction method (QuEChERS) for the determination of phthalates (plastic additives) in zooplanktonic samples. The results will be integrated with existing data to compile an original research study examining phthalate contamination in zooplanktonic samples collected from various locations with different community compositions.

Laboratory tasks include sample preparation, extraction processes, standard calibration, and analysis using chromatographic techniques coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Additionally, the student will gain skills in data analysis and scientific writing, with the possibility of drafting and publishing a research article in an international peer-reviewed journal. Dr. Annalisa Sambolino will oversee all activities, with support from co-supervisors Prof. Nereida Cordeiro and Dr. Ana Dinis.

Erasmus+ students will have access to research facilities, support services, and advanced training in the analytical determination of environmental pollutants in biological matrices. The laboratory, situated at the University of Madeira in Funchal, Madeira Island, fosters a dynamic team of interdisciplinary researchers, both national and international.

As this opportunity does not offer financial compensation from the University/Research Center, we consider only students who have been selected for an Erasmus+ scholarship.

Preference will be given to students intending to conduct their master's thesis at our facilities, although highly motivated post-graduate students interested in writing and publishing scientific articles to pursue a research career may also be considered.

Minimum internship period: 4 months (but can be longer)

Applications should preferably be sent via email to [email protected] and should consist of a short text about yourself and why you want to undertake this internship, your CV, and proof of acceptance in the Erasmus+ program (or similar). A reference letter would be considered a plus. Applicant selection will be made shortly after the deadline date (31st of May) and will include video-call interviews for the top selected candidates.
