General information

Duration:
3 months
Commitment:
2-3 days per week
Description:

Attention to all weaving and textile enthusiasts! Arna Óttarsdóttir, a contemporary textile artist, is offering an internship opportunity as a Studio Assistant.

The ideal candidate for this internship should be detail-oriented, precise, and reliable, with a passion for weaving and working with textile materials. Prior experience in weaving is a plus.

As an intern, you will be an integral part of Arna's art-making process, and your tasks will include preparing and dyeing yarn, preparing and printing sketches, winding warp and dressing the loom, helping with finishing work when off the loom and trimming edges, as well as helping with preparing for upcoming show, documentation and website building. The working period will depend on the projects, with more work in some weeks than others, depending on deadlines and the weaving process. This will allow you to work on your own projects as well.

This internship will provide you with a unique opportunity to work closely with Arna, help with upcoming shows, learn about the Icelandic art world, and work with her gallery, i8 Gallery.

Arna creates large-scale weavings, using her notebooks filled with thoughts and drawings as source material for her works. By incorporating sketches and less formal visual elements into her weavings, she infuses her work with a personal energy. The patterns, textures, and colours vary within individual works, allowing Arna to investigate the aesthetic intricacies weaving allows.

Arna Óttarsdóttir (b. 1986) lives and works in Reykjavík, Iceland. In 2021, her work was featured in Iðavöllur: Icelandic Art in the 21st Century at the Reykjavík Art Museum. Óttarsdóttir had a solo exhibition, Everything is Great, at the Living Art Museum in Reykjavík in 2019. Her work has been exhibited internationally at exhibitions, including Nordatlantens Brygge, Copenhagen; Turner Contemporary, Margate, Åplus, Berlin; and Cecilia Hillström Gallery, Stockholm.
